UV Light Installation for HVAC Systems in Austin, TX
Fight Mold, Bacteria, and Odors at the Source
At Andrew & Sons Air Duct Cleaning, we’re all about helping Austin homeowners breathe cleaner, healthier air. According to a recent VELUX study, Americans spend nearly 90% of their time indoors—that’s over 21 hours a day. With so much of life happening inside, your home’s indoor air quality matters more than ever.
We’ve already discussed the importance of air duct cleaning, dryer vent cleaning, and attic insulation, but today we want to highlight a powerful tool for cleaner air: UV light installation in your HVAC system.
What Is Ultraviolet (UV) Light?
Ultraviolet (UV) light is a proven method used in hospitals, airplanes, and labs to kill bacteria, viruses, and mold. These lights are powerful enough to damage skin and eyes, just like the sun’s rays—which is why they’re placed safely inside your HVAC system.
Will UV Light Kill All Mold in My Home?
Not exactly. UV lights are highly effective at killing mold and bacteria on HVAC coils, but they only work where the light shines directly. So while a UV system prevents mold growth inside your HVAC unit, it won’t address mold from water leaks in walls or ceilings.
For example:
Black mold (Stachybotrys) typically grows on damp drywall—not in ductwork.
UV light won’t neutralize airborne mold spores throughout the home.
It does not replace mold remediation for structural moisture issues.
However, UV lights dramatically reduce microbial buildup on coils, improving system performance, airflow, and air quality.

Best Placement for UV Lights
Correct placement is key to maximizing the UV light’s effectiveness:
Over the Coil: Ideal for disinfecting the main evaporator coil—mounted in the center of the duct above it.
End Coil Systems: The light should be offset to shine on all three coil slabs.
Air Handlers: Use a dual-lamp system—one mounted above, the other between the coil and blower motor for full coverage.
Our UV Light Installation Process
Assess Your HVAC System – We determine the best location for maximum coverage and airflow.
Mount the Device – A custom hole is cut into the duct board, and the mounting plate is secured.
Install the Bulb – A germicidal UV-C bulb is inserted and positioned to shine directly on target surfaces.
Power the System – The unit is plugged into a nearby 120V–277V outlet, designed to stay on continuously.
Safety Check – We add a peephole to safely view the light, and test the system for proper function.
Never look directly at a UV light. Our technicians use protective gear or shut off the power during servicing to ensure safety.
